During the rainy season in Guatemala, also known as winter, the weather is predominantly rainy from May to October (extending to November in Petén). Most of the rains are concentrated in September and October. However, in general, the rains tend to be heavy downpours in the afternoon rather than constant showers throughout the day. These showers are mixed with warm and sunny periods, which allows you to enjoy the good weather.

For many travelers, the dry season is considered the best time to visit Guatemala. This season runs from November to April in most of the country, although the Pacific coast has a slightly longer summer season. During these months, the skies are usually clear and blue, creating an ideal environment for climbing mountains and exploring ancient Mayan ruins. However, in mid-March, before the start of the rainy season, the air can become hazy and hot, making it difficult to see the volcanoes.

Temperatures vary by region, topography, vegetation, geology, and soil types. The coastal areas are usually hot all year round, while the mountainous highlands can be cold at night and in the early morning hours, even during the summer months. Some popular destinations, such as Antigua, Guatemala City and Cobán, which are located between 1,000 and 2,000 meters above sea level, enjoy a temperate climate. On the other hand, destinations such as Quetzaltenango, Totonicapán, Momostenango and San Pedro Sa catepéquez, located at higher altitudes, can experience temperatures close to the freezing point. Frosts are frequent in the higher elevations of Guatemala, around 3,500-4,000 meters.
