Founded in the 16th century, the capital of Guatemala until 1776, Antigua is a cosmopolitan destination, with a rich colonial past. Its long cobbled streets are lined with colorful stucco houses, crumbling ruins, but beautiful. A UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1979, in its architectural heyday, Antigua was home to more than three dozen Baroque churches and monasteries. However, after a massive earthquake in 1773, most of its structures were damaged or reduced to rubble (one exception being the iconic Santa Catalina arch, which has been held solidly in place since 1694). In the centuries since, efforts have been made to rebuild and restore, and the city now comprises a beautiful mix of impressive monuments and melancholy ruins.
